A neighbor called 911 after hearing smoke detectors sounding from a house nearby. Chief Martell arrived to find a smoke condition in the building. Engines 1, 2, and 3 responded to the scene along with Tanker 1. An engine was requested from East Brookfield and a tanker from Spencer. Both were cancelled enroute. The East Brookfield engine company provided coverage at Brookfield’s fire station. A company of firefighters from Engine 1 pulled an attack line and entered the building to track down the source of the smoke. Personnel from the other companies assisted Engine 1, and began setting up a water supply. It was determined that a malfunctioning pellet stove caused the smoke condition and there was no active fire. The hazard was isolated and smoke was ventilated from the building. The smoke detectors were restored. The homeowner was notified and arrived on the scene. All Brookfield units cleared the incident after about 45 minutes. The ambulance stood by at the station. Brookfield police assisted with traffic and notifications.
