Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Detector Guide

Covered under MGL Chapter 148 section 26 of the fire code.
Inspection is required whenever a dwelling is sold or ownership is transferred.
Certificate is only good for 60 days, so wait until you have a firm closing date scheduled before making an appointment.
Inspections take approximately 15 minutes.
There is an inspection fee of $20.00.

Other Permits

Inspections for oil burners, liquid propane storage, underground storage tank removal, and blasting are arranged by the contractor that is doing the work for you.
Liquid Propane storage inspections are required when a new LP system is installed, a propane tank is replaced, or you change propane suppliers.
A permit is required for fuel tanks mounted in the back of pick-up trucks used to fuel equipment.

Open Burning

Regulations

 

  • You may only burn small diameter brush. No other materials are covered under the open burning law. No leaves, grass, hay, stumps, building debris or any other materials are allowed to be burned.
  • All open burning must be a minimum of 75 feet from buildings or structures.
  • Burning will be allowed to start at 10:00am and must be extinguished by 4pm.
  • Any open fire must be attended at all times by the permit holder.
  • No person shall set, maintain or increase a fire in open air at any time except by permission.
  • You must be 18 years or older to apply for a permit and/or set, maintain or increase a fire once permission has been granted by the Fire Department.
  • You must have an appropriate means to extinguish an open air fire completely at the end of the day or if requested by the Fire Department.
  • The Fire Department can refuse or cancel a permit at any time. (Example: Violation of permit regulations, or change in weather conditions).
  • Open burning can be suspended by the state or the FD at any time.
  • Open burning season is January 15 – May 1.

How to obtain a permit

Open Burning season begins on January 15th and runs through April 30th.
Permits can be obtained by calling 508 867-1066 between 7:30AM and noon on the day you are going to burn.  Or click burning permit online.
Burning is allowed from 10:00AM to 4:00PM.
There is no fee for a burning permit.
Only small diameter brush (less than 3″) may be burned.
The burning of trash, building materials, stumps, tires, logs, leaves, furniture is not allowed.
Fires must be at least 75 feet away from any dwelling.
Fires must be attended to by a responsible adult at all times.
The use of accelerants such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, or others is not permitted.
Open burning may be suspended by the state or the Fire Dept at any time.
